It seems that my weekend of research bore some edible fruit, even as a mere cautionary tale. Steven Gilbert has the same questions I had regarding John Kerry’s reserve military service. Unlike me, however, he avoids making premature conclusions and merely wanted to know,
So Lt. Kerry was in the Naval Reserves during the time he was meeting with the enemy. Did his reported activity not violate the UMCJ? If not, why not?I emailed the American Thinker and its editor, Thomas Lifson, promptly replied with his thanks for the information and added a link to my research. He received additional input from a JAG officer.
As some of my readers have admitted, it’s a human failing to want to think the worst of one’s opponents. I admit that it’s one of a substantial number in my own character.
To recognize it and work through it to real objectivity is a goal to which we all should aspire. Likely I’ll fall down in this area again, but I’ll try to be more attentive to it from now on.
