Did anyone see the Luntz focus group session of the Democrat Debates last night? I saw a portion during which a Hispanic man asserted that absolutely none of the lower level restaurant employees--read: young Hispanics--would ever vote for Obama. When the other focus group participants asked him why not, the man evaded the question and merely reasserted his point.
My first thought was that none of those young Hispanics would vote for Obama because of Obama's race. However, I am open to the notion that there could be other reasons.
UPDATE: I think that the focus group was composed of members of the Culinary Workers Union in Nevada which has endorsed Barack Obama. That union is almost 40% Hispanic and I don't doubt that the man in question knows what he knows, but I'm wondering whether what he knows will have any effect on the Democrat vote in that state or others. Young men of any race spout off; they also aren't generally politically active. Especially not so are young black and Hispanic men.
UPDATE: Bryan has the video. Will comment after reviewing it.
UPDATE and CORRECTION: The focus group was composed of Nevada Democrat voters in general but the subject was the clash between Nevada’s Teacher’s Union, which endorsed Clinton, and the state’s Culinary Worker Union which endorsed Obama.
The man who commented on the Hispanics in the Culinary Workers’ Union was talking about more than just the prospective votes of the young men who are the busboys, etc. However, he seemed to know that he was stepping into a racial minefield, especially after the other participants kept asking him to explain his conclusion.
UPDATE: Screwed. Obama’s controversial preacher/mentor Jeremiah Wright said that the Clintons treated black people the way Bill treated Monica Lewinsky! Well…yeah.
More in the last link about Wright’s close ties with Louis Farrakhan. Obama repudiated Farrakhan’s anti-Semitism in a statement yesterday.
