Where Are This Man's Children?

[Former President Jimmy Carter] spoke in Jerusalem after meeting last week with top Hamas leader, Khaled Mashaal, and his deputy in Syria. It capped a nine-day visit to the Mideast aimed at breaking the deadlock between Israel and Hamas militants who rule the Gaza Strip."They (Hamas) said that they would accept a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, if approved by Palestinians and that they would accept the right of Israel to live as a neighbor next door in peace," Carter said.
In Damascus, Mashaal said Hamas was offering Israel a 10-year truce if it withdraws from all lands it seized in the 1967 war.
He confirmed that Hamas would be satisfied with a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders — implicitly accepting that Israel would exist alongside that state. But Mashaal stressed the group would never outright recognize the Jewish state.
"We agree to a (Palestinian) state on pre-67 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital with genuine sovereignty without settlements but without recognizing Israel," Mashaal told reporters.
Nobody's buying it; How can you offer a truce to a country which you don't believe exists? Hamas-types aren't even crafty enough to keep from contradicting Carter.
Or perhaps Hamas is having sport with a bitter old man who is possibly suffering from dementia.
If the former president's kids loved him, they would intervene. It's sad, however, to ponder that they may be as tired of him as many of the rest of us are.

Does the term "hudna" mean anything to anybody? That's what Mashaal is offering, and the precise meaning of this word from the Qu'ran is a truce (yup) of up to 10 years (that's there, too) in order for the Muslim side to rebuild its strength so it can eventually overcome its enemy (hmm, it seems that somehow Mashaal neglected to tell Jimmah this part. Not that it would have made any difference).
For those of us with memories longer than a 3-year-old's, this is the same offer that was made several years ago when Jimmah crowed that Hamas was interested in a hudna (yes, he used that term; look it up, probably from 2005 or so), so it's not like he hasn't done this before. In the immortal words of Bugs Bunny, "What a maroon!"

Sorry for not being able to remember everything about everything.
In the HA link at the bottom, Ed makes the point that Hamas did this back in 2006 and in the trackback Lawhawk makes the point about Hudnas.

Amy has three older brothers:
"John William 'Jack' Carter (born 1947); James Earl 'Chip' Carter III (born 1950); Donnel Jeffrey 'Jeff' Carter, (born 1952)."

And your link is faulty. Want to try for three?

"Sorry for not being able to remember everything about everything".
Hey, nobody can remember everything, (I didn't remember the right year of the previous Hudna) and anyway, you weren't my target for my "longer than a 3-year-old" comment. It's everyone who thinks that Jimmah is getting anything other than screwed by Hamas with this "latest" offer (which looks exactly like the last offer). Of course, Jimmah isn't the one who'll get screwed, it's the Israelis. Even though I'm feeling a bit less charitable towards them today (I'm sure you have a good idea why), Hamas is still the bad guy. It's no contest.
